DIY Hair Treatment

It may not be fall but it sure feels like it out there. So happy almost autumn! It’s my favourite time of year!

One thing that makes my life difficult is I have a lot of allergies. Part of that means that I have sensitive skin, especially my scalp. I have yet to find an affordable shampoo that doesn’t irritate my head after a few weeks of use!

One of the ways that I help reduce the itch is using hair masks and hot oil treatments. But a lot of these treatments aren’t very budget-friendly. So here’s a recipe for a homemade hot oil treatment that I’m currently loving!

What You’ll Need

  • Coconut Oil
  • Peppermint and Lemon Essential Oils
  • A microwave safe container
  • A plastic grocery bag (optional)
  • Lemon dish soap (optional)
  • How to Get Away with Murder in the background (optional but highly recommended)

1) Add a few spoonfuls of coconut oil to your dish. There are no precise measurements for this, just use as much as you think you’ll need to cover your scalp. Place in the microwave for 10 seconds at a time until it becomes a liquid.

2) Add two drops each of peppermint and lemon essential oil. Stir until well mixed.

3) Dip your fingers in, or pour a small amount into your hand. Massage into your scalp until all the liquid is used. Make sure you are putting the mask onto your actual head and not just your hair. Leave on for 1 hour.

4) This step is optional, but if you want to protect your furniture while you wait, you can cover your hair with a shower cap or plastic grocery bag. It doesn’t look the prettiest, but it works!

5) To ensure your hair isn’t greasy after, you can wash it using dish soap. This will take the oil out of your hair. I usually mix it with a bit of shampoo just to keep some moisture in!

Et voila! Hopefully this little trick will help you if you suffer from a sensitive scalp like me. The reason it works well is because lemon and peppermint essential oils have soothing, cleansing and anti-fungal properties that will hopefully remove whatever is causing the issue.

Happy long weekend, and good luck if you are headed back to school this week!

Edit: I forgot to mention that I would not do this treatment if you have somewhere to be!! I would recommend washing your hair at least once more to look presentable as the oil tends to cling to the roots.

Always Happiest When by the Sea

I don’t know about you, but I feel like there is something so peaceful about being near bodies of water. I grew up with a view of the river, and the Bay of Fundy close by. But I think I kind of took it for granted, until I moved to a new city where I didn’t know where “my water” was. Since moving, I have made it my mission to travel the coast and find a spot that makes my heart feel full! When I look at the ocean, I can’t help but be thankful for the beautiful places God has created for us to see! I’m not an outdoorsy person, but the ocean is the type of outdoors I can handle.

One of the most recent trips I took was to the little coastal towns of Mahone Bay and Lunenburg. Penny and I really enjoyed discovering all of the little shops, and I think I stopped at least 10 times at little beaches along the way home!

Did you know that wherever you are in Nova Scotia, you’re never more than 67 kilometres from the sea? Now that’s a statistic that I like to see (sea?)!

What’s your favourite happy place? Let me know!

Penny loves the city!

Howdy! Look at me, I'm on a roll!

I mentioned in my first post that I was going to keep my location secret for privacy reasons. But a lot of the post ideas I've had involve different places around the city, which would definitely give it away! So I have added a map at the bottom of my page of the best little city there is, Halifax, Nova Scotia! ❀

Now, on to our topic, the love of my life! This is my puppy, Penny.

Penny is my 1.5 year old Shih Tzu, and we've been through a lot together! She moved with me into my first apartment back home, and then made the big trip with me to Halifax. And let me tell you, she loves it here!

I think some people would disagree, but this city is actually really dog friendly. There are a lot of stores that allow dogs inside now, and we go shopping all the time! So far we have tried out Canadian Tire and HomeSense, and looking forward to checking out Chapters and Michael's!

Penny can be a vicious creature sometimes, but I wouldn't have it any other way! I've definitely learned a lot of lessons since she came into my life! Tell me about your pets in the comments!

The Round-Up: 5 Apps I’m Loving

Hey y’all,

I’ve decided to start a new series to keep things interesting. Every few weeks, I’ll do a round-up of some things I have been loving over the past while. To start, let’s look at some of my favourite iPhone apps! I have the iPhone 7 Plus, so I do a lot on my phone. You gotta have the right tools to do the job! In no particular order, here we goooo…

1. Instagram

This one probably goes without saying, but I am obsessed with Instagram lately! The fact that so many celebrities and cool people have Instagram and post regularly is what I love most about it. Add in the newer Stories feature, and I’m hooked! I have just created an Insta account for this blog, head on over and give me a follow @livinthecity25 !!

2. 1 Second Everyday

This app is great for making memories! It sends you little reminders every day to take a video, for literally 1 second. So easy! Whenever you want, you can make your clips into a continuous video that shows all of your memories together! If you forget to take a video, you can also use a picture. I’m doing this every day for my year of being 25!

(Screenshot is not my actual budget… I wish!

Alright, this one is not just an app, but it has changed my life.Β YNAB stands for “You Need a Budget” and it’s the bomb. This budget app/website/software is based on the envelope method of budgeting. You don’t really budget into the future, you simply budget what you already have in your account. Then, it keeps track of your purchases to let you know how much you have left in each category. It does cost a subscription fee, but only if you want to automatically import your bank transactions. I’ve been just typing my transactions in manually, as it doesn’t seem to connect well with my bank. If you’re trying to figure your financial life out, this is definitely helpful to do that!

4. PC Plus

PC Plus is just the best. If you shop at Superstore, Loblaws, No Frills, etc then this app is for you. Just scan your card whenever you shop, and eventually you’ll start getting offers for points on things you would actually buy. It’s personalized! However, I get most of my points from buying gas! My best friend told me about this, and I haven’t looked back since. For Gas Bar locations at the stores, you get 50 points per litre of gas. That adds up fast! Before you know it, you’ve got some free groceries. Happy point hunting!

5. Libby

Now this one is COOL! If your library participates in this, it’s a quick and easy way to download ebooks for freeeee! Just log in using your library card, and you can check out ebooks just like a regular book. Just like at the library, there are only a certain number of copies of each book, so you’ll have to place a hold if they’re all checked out. But it definitely beats paying big money, and so convenient for traveling! Enjoy your next book!

And there you have it! My top 5 apps of the moment. Let me know in the comments, what apps are you loving lately?

Until next time,

Stop Comparing and Start Living

Have you ever compared yourself, and where you are in life, to others? Has it made you feel pretty bummed? This is a major struggle I’m facing right now. I’m 25, and I don’t have a house, I don’t have a boyfriend, and basically I don’t fully have my shit together yet. So for the past few days I’ve really been working hard to try and put things into perspective.

There is always going to be a time where someone has more, or better things in life. It doesn’t matter what I do. All I need to do is think really hard about what is important to me, and go from there. I may not have a house. But right now I’m sitting on my balcony with my freshly planted flowers and carefully hung twinkle lights, writing this while my puppy sleeps beside me. I may not have a boyfriend, but I have some of the best friends a girl could ask for. I may not have my financial situation fully together, but I’ve been on some of the most amazing trips and had the best experiences. If that’s what makes me happy, then I need to stop comparing, and start living!

If you’re reading this and it’s ringing a bell, I’d love to hear how you deal with this struggle, in the comments below!

25th Year Bucket List

Hello world!

So, the day has come… I’m officially 25. With this new city, new job, and pretty much a new chapter in life, I decided to set some goals for this milestone year. I started with a goal of 25 things (for the aesthetic appeal) but I was having a hard time coming up with that many worthy aspirations! So, without further ado, here is my list of 10 things I want to do in my 25th year. It was harder than you might think to come up with even 10!!!

  1. Check out some parks in/around the city – there are a lot of beautiful, dogs off-leash parks around the area, and I can’t wait to explore them this summer!
  2. Investigate the food truck scene (and blog about it!)
  3. Save money – my ultimate goal in a few years is to buy a house, so it’s time to start saving that pesky down payment! Hopefully having my friend move in this summer will help with this.
  4. Meet new people – I’ve pretty much stuck with the same friend group since university, and since all of my other friends are back home, it’s time to expand the circle!
  5. Take a trip – this city’s airport is much bigger and has lots of options for flights, so I’d like to take a trip somewhere and take advantage of the flight deals! So far, I have a trip to Boston planned for my birthday next year, to see Harry Styles! Although, we’ll be driving for that.
  6. Try new food – this probably won’t help the saving money thing… but I am notorious for sticking to chain restaurants, and it’s time to branch out!
  7. Feel okay to say ‘no’ – People may ask me to do a lot of things…. but I can say no and not feel bad about it!
  8. Visit a brewery or winery – I don’t know, I’m just intrigued!
  9. Make my new place feel like home – right now it still feels like a mish mash of my things with no rhyme or reason.
  10. Feel okay to say no, but try to say ‘yes’ more too! Life begins at the end of your comfort zone!

Here I go on what I hope to be the best year ever!

Until next time!

What’s Happening?

Hey there beautiful people! It’s me, and I bet you’re shocked to see I’m still alive! If you followed me over here from my old address, thanks for taking the leap with me. And if you’re new here, welcome! I’m Olivia. I post very sporadically, and I just share my thoughts and the occasional adventure! But this return to blogging at this time is not a coincidence…

This week marks my last few days of being 24… Next Sunday I turn TWENTY-FIVE???? If any of you have passed this milestone, then you’re probably thinking I’m crazy for freaking out about this, but to me it’s a big deal! Now, since the last time I blogged over on my old site, a lot has changed. Last March I got a dog, I moved out of my parents place, and then a year later… I have gotten a new job about 4 hours from home, and I’ve moved to the “big city”! No… not New York or Toronto. I’m still in Canada, and the city actually isn’t all that big, but for me it’s a huge change. And I am loving it! As of right now, I’m not going to mention which city for privacy reasons, but if you’re from this area you’ll probably figure it out pretty quickly.

So, I’ve been given this amazing opportunity to work at an incredible job, in a beautiful, gorgeous city, and I’m turning 25. I’ve got a new lease on life, and I want to share it with you! I’ve committed myself to a year of blogging, and I hope I can keep up with it. Notice that I didn’t say how often πŸ˜‰ but I am really looking forward to the journey!

The next time you hear from me, I’ll be a quarter-century old… here goes nothing!!!

Until next time,

My Whole Life is Old Navy

Hi, my name is Olivia, and I’m an Old Navy addict…

Dress and jean jacket from ON for my grad photos.

It all started about 5 years ago. For the longest time, I could never find a pair of jeans that would fit me just how I wanted them to. They were either too tight in the waist or too long in the legs, or too “mom-ish”, or too flared, etc… One day, my mom came home with some clothes for me and everything changed. She had been to Old Navy, and while I don’t usually like the clothes she picks out for me, I tried on the jeans anyway. They fit like a glove! I always thought that Old Navy had “old people” or “preppy clothes”. But since that day, I don’t think I have ever bought a pair of pants from anywhere else.

Rocking the Old Navy sweater, cami and
jeans which you can’t see while at Costco…

Seriously, Old Navy has clothes for every style and shape. Somehow, when I go into the store, I know I can pick up any shirt and as long as it’s my usual size, I don’t even have to try it on. Their jeans are actually the best. They fit just right, sucking in at all the right places. They’ve also got coloured and patterned pants which I just love and own a large variety of. They always have different dresses available, which vary in color, pattern and style but all seem to fit the same way. I wish I was kidding when I said that literally every article of clothing I wear on a regular basis is from Old Navy.

Dress from Old Navy at my BFFs wedding shower.

As someone who is considered “plus size” by most standards, I find it really hard to go into stores and not be able to shop in the “regular” section, instead having to scout out the Plus section. In Old Navy, there’s no such thing. All of their clothes go up to size XXL and the pants go up to size 20 (I think possibly higher online as well). I can’t tell you how great it is to be able to walk into a store, and not worry about if I’ll find something that fits. The sky is the limit!

At the Justin Bieber concert in Quebec City!
Outfits of all three of us on the right…. Old Navy…
And I have the blue striped dress too.Β

The final thing I love SO much about Old Navy is the prices. Some thrift shoppers of the world might walk in and think a lot of their clothes are a little pricey. However, if you sign up for their emails you’ll know that they pretty much alwaysΒ have some kind of sale going on. For example, last night I went and almost everything was 40% off! They also have “Super Cash” sometimes, where you earn Super Cash to use on another trip a few weeks later. Yesterday I got around $300 worth of clothes for $80! Can’t beat that!

Before you ask, this post is not sponsored (although Old Navy please hit me up if you’re interested because I basically keep you in business with my purchases alone…). I just wanted to share with the world where you can find great clothes for good prices, regardless of your size! If I could, I seriously would just live there.

Do you have a store that is like this for you? Do you shop at Old Navy often? Let me know!

Until next time,
Liv ❀

Where am I now???

So… I have a blog… This is a fact that I have somewhat forgotten for almost TWO YEARS?! Holy moly, how things can change in such a short amount of time! For my followers, I hope you haven’t forgotten about me, and I hope to make this blog a place where you can visit again regularly.

Here’s a quick life update – since the last time I posted, I have (in no particular order):
– Finished my Masters degree
– Gotten a promotion at work
– Moved into my own apartment
– Welcomed a brand new puppy
– Sold my guinea pig due to allergies πŸ˜₯
– Been the Maid of Honour in my best friend’s wedding
– Started working at my church part-time in the youth department

So I guess you could say a LOT has been going on! Now that the changes are done and the dust has settled, let’s get this blog up and running again! I feel like now that I’m out on my own and the education is finished, this is where the real exploration begins. I want to use this blog to document the journey!

So, I look forward to taking you all along with me!

See you soon!
