DIY Hair Treatment

Hola!

It may not be fall but it sure feels like it out there. So happy almost autumn! It’s my favourite time of year!

One thing that makes my life difficult is I have a lot of allergies. Part of that means that I have sensitive skin, especially my scalp. I have yet to find an affordable shampoo that doesn’t irritate my head after a few weeks of use!

One of the ways that I help reduce the itch is using hair masks and hot oil treatments. But a lot of these treatments aren’t very budget-friendly. So here’s a recipe for a homemade hot oil treatment that I’m currently loving!

What You’ll Need

  • Coconut Oil
  • Peppermint and Lemon Essential Oils
  • A microwave safe container
  • A plastic grocery bag (optional)
  • Lemon dish soap (optional)
  • How to Get Away with Murder in the background (optional but highly recommended)

Instructions

1) Add a few spoonfuls of coconut oil to your dish. There are no precise measurements for this, just use as much as you think you’ll need to cover your scalp. Place in the microwave for 10 seconds at a time until it becomes a liquid.

2) Add two drops each of peppermint and lemon essential oil. Stir until well mixed.

3) Dip your fingers in, or pour a small amount into your hand. Massage into your scalp until all the liquid is used. Make sure you are putting the mask onto your actual head and not just your hair. Leave on for 1 hour.

4) This step is optional, but if you want to protect your furniture while you wait, you can cover your hair with a shower cap or plastic grocery bag. It doesn’t look the prettiest, but it works!

5) To ensure your hair isn’t greasy after, you can wash it using dish soap. This will take the oil out of your hair. I usually mix it with a bit of shampoo just to keep some moisture in!

Et voila! Hopefully this little trick will help you if you suffer from a sensitive scalp like me. The reason it works well is because lemon and peppermint essential oils have soothing, cleansing and anti-fungal properties that will hopefully remove whatever is causing the issue.

Happy long weekend, and good luck if you are headed back to school this week!

Edit: I forgot to mention that I would not do this treatment if you have somewhere to be!! I would recommend washing your hair at least once more to look presentable as the oil tends to cling to the roots.

Always Happiest When by the Sea

Ahoy!

I don’t know about you, but I feel like there is something so peaceful about being near bodies of water. I grew up with a view of the river, and the Bay of Fundy close by. But I think I kind of took it for granted, until I moved to a new city where I didn’t know where “my water” was. Since moving, I have made it my mission to travel the coast and find a spot that makes my heart feel full! When I look at the ocean, I can’t help but be thankful for the beautiful places God has created for us to see! I’m not an outdoorsy person, but the ocean is the type of outdoors I can handle.

One of the most recent trips I took was to the little coastal towns of Mahone Bay and Lunenburg. Penny and I really enjoyed discovering all of the little shops, and I think I stopped at least 10 times at little beaches along the way home!

Did you know that wherever you are in Nova Scotia, you’re never more than 67 kilometres from the sea? Now that’s a statistic that I like to see (sea?)!

What’s your favourite happy place? Let me know!

Penny loves the city!

Howdy! Look at me, I'm on a roll!

I mentioned in my first post that I was going to keep my location secret for privacy reasons. But a lot of the post ideas I've had involve different places around the city, which would definitely give it away! So I have added a map at the bottom of my page of the best little city there is, Halifax, Nova Scotia! ❀

Now, on to our topic, the love of my life! This is my puppy, Penny.

image1 (4)

Penny is my 1.5 year old Shih Tzu, and we've been through a lot together! She moved with me into my first apartment back home, and then made the big trip with me to Halifax. And let me tell you, she loves it here!

I think some people would disagree, but this city is actually really dog friendly. There are a lot of stores that allow dogs inside now, and we go shopping all the time! So far we have tried out Canadian Tire and HomeSense, and looking forward to checking out Chapters and Michael's!

Penny can be a vicious creature sometimes, but I wouldn't have it any other way! I've definitely learned a lot of lessons since she came into my life! Tell me about your pets in the comments!

The Round-Up: 5 Apps I’m Loving

Hey y’all,

I’ve decided to start a new series to keep things interesting. Every few weeks, I’ll do a round-up of some things I have been loving over the past while. To start, let’s look at some of my favourite iPhone apps! I have the iPhone 7 Plus, so I do a lot on my phone. You gotta have the right tools to do the job! In no particular order, here we goooo…

1. Instagram

This one probably goes without saying, but I am obsessed with Instagram lately! The fact that so many celebrities and cool people have Instagram and post regularly is what I love most about it. Add in the newer Stories feature, and I’m hooked! I have just created an Insta account for this blog, head on over and give me a follow @livinthecity25 !!

2. 1 Second Everyday

This app is great for making memories! It sends you little reminders every day to take a video, for literally 1 second. So easy! Whenever you want, you can make your clips into a continuous video that shows all of your memories together! If you forget to take a video, you can also use a picture. I’m doing this every day for my year of being 25!

3. YNAB

(Screenshot is not my actual budget… I wish!

Alright, this one is not just an app, but it has changed my life.Β YNAB stands for “You Need a Budget” and it’s the bomb. This budget app/website/software is based on the envelope method of budgeting. You don’t really budget into the future, you simply budget what you already have in your account. Then, it keeps track of your purchases to let you know how much you have left in each category. It does cost a subscription fee, but only if you want to automatically import your bank transactions. I’ve been just typing my transactions in manually, as it doesn’t seem to connect well with my bank. If you’re trying to figure your financial life out, this is definitely helpful to do that!

4. PC Plus

PC Plus is just the best. If you shop at Superstore, Loblaws, No Frills, etc then this app is for you. Just scan your card whenever you shop, and eventually you’ll start getting offers for points on things you would actually buy. It’s personalized! However, I get most of my points from buying gas! My best friend told me about this, and I haven’t looked back since. For Gas Bar locations at the stores, you get 50 points per litre of gas. That adds up fast! Before you know it, you’ve got some free groceries. Happy point hunting!

5. Libby

Now this one is COOL! If your library participates in this, it’s a quick and easy way to download ebooks for freeeee! Just log in using your library card, and you can check out ebooks just like a regular book. Just like at the library, there are only a certain number of copies of each book, so you’ll have to place a hold if they’re all checked out. But it definitely beats paying big money, and so convenient for traveling! Enjoy your next book!

And there you have it! My top 5 apps of the moment. Let me know in the comments, what apps are you loving lately?

Until next time,

Stop Comparing and Start Living

Have you ever compared yourself, and where you are in life, to others? Has it made you feel pretty bummed? This is a major struggle I’m facing right now. I’m 25, and I don’t have a house, I don’t have a boyfriend, and basically I don’t fully have my shit together yet. So for the past few days I’ve really been working hard to try and put things into perspective.

There is always going to be a time where someone has more, or better things in life. It doesn’t matter what I do. All I need to do is think really hard about what is important to me, and go from there. I may not have a house. But right now I’m sitting on my balcony with my freshly planted flowers and carefully hung twinkle lights, writing this while my puppy sleeps beside me. I may not have a boyfriend, but I have some of the best friends a girl could ask for. I may not have my financial situation fully together, but I’ve been on some of the most amazing trips and had the best experiences. If that’s what makes me happy, then I need to stop comparing, and start living!

If you’re reading this and it’s ringing a bell, I’d love to hear how you deal with this struggle, in the comments below!

Until next time,

Liv

25th Year Bucket List

Hello world!

So, the day has come… I’m officially 25. With this new city, new job, and pretty much a new chapter in life, I decided to set some goals for this milestone year. I started with a goal of 25 things (for the aesthetic appeal) but I was having a hard time coming up with that many worthy aspirations! So, without further ado, here is my list of 10 things I want to do in my 25th year. It was harder than you might think to come up with even 10!!!

  1. Check out some parks in/around the city – there are a lot of beautiful, dogs off-leash parks around the area, and I can’t wait to explore them this summer!
  2. Investigate the food truck scene (and blog about it!)
  3. Save money – my ultimate goal in a few years is to buy a house, so it’s time to start saving that pesky down payment! Hopefully having my friend move in this summer will help with this.
  4. Meet new people – I’ve pretty much stuck with the same friend group since university, and since all of my other friends are back home, it’s time to expand the circle!
  5. Take a trip – this city’s airport is much bigger and has lots of options for flights, so I’d like to take a trip somewhere and take advantage of the flight deals! So far, I have a trip to Boston planned for my birthday next year, to see Harry Styles! Although, we’ll be driving for that.
  6. Try new food – this probably won’t help the saving money thing… but I am notorious for sticking to chain restaurants, and it’s time to branch out!
  7. Feel okay to say ‘no’ – People may ask me to do a lot of things…. but I can say no and not feel bad about it!
  8. Visit a brewery or winery – I don’t know, I’m just intrigued!
  9. Make my new place feel like home – right now it still feels like a mish mash of my things with no rhyme or reason.
  10. Feel okay to say no, but try to say ‘yes’ more too! Life begins at the end of your comfort zone!

Here I go on what I hope to be the best year ever!

Until next time!

Where am I now???

Howdy!

So… I have a blog… This is a fact that I have somewhat forgotten for almost TWO YEARS?! Holy moly, how things can change in such a short amount of time! For my followers, I hope you haven’t forgotten about me, and I hope to make this blog a place where you can visit again regularly.

Here’s a quick life update – since the last time I posted, I have (in no particular order):
– Finished my Masters degree
– Gotten a promotion at work
– Moved into my own apartment
– Welcomed a brand new puppy
– Sold my guinea pig due to allergies πŸ˜₯
– Gone BLONDE
– Been the Maid of Honour in my best friend’s wedding
– Started working at my church part-time in the youth department

So I guess you could say a LOT has been going on! Now that the changes are done and the dust has settled, let’s get this blog up and running again! I feel like now that I’m out on my own and the education is finished, this is where the real exploration begins. I want to use this blog to document the journey!

So, I look forward to taking you all along with me!

See you soon!

Ke$ha in Person

Hey everyone,
happy Saturday!

In my entire life, before this year, I had only ever been to two real concerts. One was the Moffats (please tell me someone remembers them), and the other was Hilary Duff. This past August, I had the awesome chance to go see Ke$ha in concert during her Warrior tour. Since I never really even posted any pictures on Facebook, I thought why not share some snaps with you all. Because of the really bright lights, I don’t think I actually managed to get a good picture of Ke$ha… but you can at least see some things that we did and saw!

As you can see, we may or may not have gotten photobombed in that one.

And here is a little video!

The next concert that I will be going to is ONE DIRECTION and I can hardly wait! What concerts have you been to, or do you look forward to attending in the future? Let me know in the comments!

Until next time,

My Celebrity Dinner Party

Hey everybody,
Welcome!

For today’s post, I thought I’d try something a little different. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have all of your favourite celebrities, dead or alive, in one place? I know I have. So what I’ve decided to do is compile a list, in no particular order, of who I would invite to my celebrity dinner party and why.

1) Khloe Kardashian Odom

Say what you will, but Khloe is probably my favourite of the Kardashians. She is so funny, and is always getting into some kind of shenanigans. So imagine what fun events she could bring to a dinner party! I know I’d love to find out.

2) Bryan Cranston

You probably recognize him as Walter White, the bad-ass meth manufacturer from Breaking Bad. But what I want to know is: is he really that bad-ass in real life? And if not, how does he channel his inner criminal? This could be a really good discussion.

3) Zooey Deschanel

She just seems so quirky, doesn’t she? I absolutely love every movie or TV show she has ever been in, and I would love to just sit down and talk to her and experience her uniqueness (is that a word?) in person.

4) Niall Horan

Well, to start with, who wouldn’t want to just stare at Niall for the entirety of a dinner party? I know I would, no problem. But if you’ve seen One Direction’s movie “This is Us” (which I have… twice), you will know that Niall has a really funny, creative streak. While watching that movie, he may have just earned a soft spot in my heart. I’d love to know his thoughts on the band’s whirlwind success and everything that comes with it. And with his and Khloe’s crazy antics combined, everyone will be in for a treat!

5) Cory Monteith

Since I first started watching Glee, Finn was always my favourite character. So earnest, funny, and determined. Cory Monteith, as a person, was also an inspiration to me. A Canadian like myself, he worked many unfulfilling jobs before finally making it big at age 27. Although he died in a terrible way, his life continues to be an inspiration to many. I would have loved to get a chance to meet him, and talk to him about what motivated him to keep trying for as long as he did and pursue his dreams. Rest in peace, Cory.

Well, I don’t know about you, but if I were planning on having this dinner party at my house, I don’t think I’d have room for too many more. But what I’d like to know is, who would you invite to your celebrity dinner party?

I’m going to call this the “Celebrity Dinner Party Tag”, so I want to ‘tag’ you all to do this post on your own blog! Post a link to your blog in the comments, so I can read your guest list. If you don’t have a blog, write your guest list in the comments! I’m interested to see who y’all would pick.

Until next time,
Liv xoxo

The Little Things Are the Big Things

Have you ever found yourself feeling very bored? Or caught yourself wishing your life was better, or more grand? I know I have. Sometimes it feels like our little lives are dull, uneventful, not exciting enough. But when you step back and look at the big picture, you might find that the little things in life are what make it wonderful. So today I thought I would share with you a few things in my life that I am very grateful for, no matter how little. Be forewarned, most of these snaps are from my phone and not of the best photographic quality.

Perusing the bargain bin at Target. ‘Romantic Favorites’? Hmmm…

The beauty of your city.

A colourful sunset.

Dinner with friends.

Making teddy bears with your bestie.

Taking pictures of your brother when he falls asleep at work.

When little kids make you stuff.

See what I mean? All of those things are pretty simple, but don’t they just make life that much brighter? What are some little things in your life that make you happy? Let me know!

Until next time,
Liv ❀
